Summary

James Mitchell Events Ltd is looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking technician to join our team and deliver our DramaTechs service to schools in the South East, mainly within a 50 mile radius of our base in Sevenoaks, Kent. This post requires an experienced technician with established skills in at least one technical discipline as well as the ability and flexibility to cover other skills including lighting, sound and set construction. This role requires someone who is adaptable and highly competent, allowing them to work on multiple productions throughout the year with short and intense production timelines. Our vision is to provide a platform for young people to perform using creative designs executed to a professional standard of production.

 

Main Responsibilities

Our Theatre Technician will play an important part in delivering a high quality, safe and creative experience for young people to perform. They will support a wide range of productions produced by Schools, Youth Theatre Companies and Local Production Companies. The right person for this role will have a broad understanding and experience of technical theatre and will be called upon to design, create and operate all aspects of the production alongside the rest of the team. Being a multi skilled role, the list of responsibilities are vast however training will be provided to develop any missing skills. Some of the main responsibilities are listed below:

·        Lighting – Design, rigging, focusing, plotting and operating for a variety of performances

·        Sound – Design, live mixing, Qlab programming and operating

·        Projection – Image sourcing and editing, Qlab programming and operating

·        Video – Use of live streaming camera systems and post edit work for filmed productions

·        Set – Design, wood working skills, metal working skills and scenic painting

·        Props – Researching, sourcing and purchasing props for productions

·        Equipment servicing – Cleaning, repairs and PAT Testing

·        Warehouse work – Prepping equipment hires, deliveries, tidying stores

·        Overseeing casual crew duties whilst on site

·        Working with and training student crew

 

Skills Required

This role requires a technician with multiple skills across all technical disciplines. A specialist skill of either lighting, sound or set construction is preferable and the remaining skills can be developed over time with training. This role requires the following skills:

·        Experience working in theatre either as an employee or freelancer

·        Experience working in a school is ideal, however not essential

·        A good understanding of the theatre industry including latest equipment

·        Must be a good people person able to work with students, teachers and directors

·        Must be good at problem solving and keeping calm under pressure

·        Skilled in lighting programming especially ETC Eos family consoles as well as Zero88 Jester, Solution and FLX consoles.

·        Skilled in live sound mixing with experience in mixing musicals. Should be familiar with Digico, Yamaha and Allen & Heath consoles.

·        Knowledge of Qlab including programming and operating sound effects.

·        Confident working at height; Rigging lighting using access equipment including ladders, tallescopes, towers and MEWP’s

·        Creative skills with experience in design work in at least one technical discipline

·        Basic video editing

·        Basic set building skills including building steel deck structures and woodwork skills.

·        Equipment servicing and PAT Testing

·        Full Clean UK Driving Licence

·        The ability to work with young people

·        Teaching and leadership skills when working with student crew

 

Hours of Work

40 Hours per week, flexible hours including evenings and weekends. Varied working hours with no standard working week.


Remuneration & Benefits

·        An annual salary of £33,000 - £36,000 subject to qualifications and experience

·        Overtime available with prior agreement and subject to work load

·        Four weeks paid holiday as well as public bank holidays

·        Pension Scheme available

 

Safeguarding

James Mitchell Events Ltd takes safeguarding very seriously with our staff in direct contact with children every day. It is therefore important that you have a valid DBS certificate in order to undertake this role. You may be required to undertake further checks directly from the client and these will need to be cleared before working on site. You will need to adhere to our internal safeguarding policy and you may need to undertake training and complete paperwork for each individual client as required. If you have any concerns regarding a child this should be reported to your line manager who will notify the client via the designated channels. Each client has a designated safeguarding officer and procedure.
